Cisco training becoming popular In Cambodia
Network training with American IT giant Cisco becoming more widelyavailable and popular as Cambodians look to increase theircompetitiveness in the job market

& h D* [; I" g0 bSINCE 2002, Cisco, the largest maker ofnetworking equipment in the world, has run computer network trainingcourses for Cambodians.

Based on the program's success in its early years at the government'sNational ICT Development Authority facility in Phnom Penh, the trainingprogram has expanded to high schools and universities in the capital,said Hong Sophany, a marketing representative of Cisco NetworkingAcademy Program at Yejj Institute. ; g* M5 M; l) @
$ z( [9 l4 ]% I$ d7 W+ PFor Leng Bunny, an instructor with Cisco, the motivation for the training is simple: "People enroll because it gets them jobs."

% j3 P9 f7 C" `9 t* d1 u" YA Cisco-approved tag, he said, does not come easily. Students mustundergo four course levels, each three months long, and pass a finaltest to earn the title Cisco Certified Networking Associate.

; ^. e) M% j( V/ C) c9 ]1 c0 _, x"The popularity of the training class is growing fast along with thedevelopment of the telecoms sector in Cambodia," Leng Bunny said.

1 \9 V1 G2 k' f8 c2 ?; L+ hAround 2,250 people have enrolled in the Cisco Networking AcademyProgram since its inception, with 164 earning a Cisco CertifiedNetworking Associate degree and just six earning Cisco's Professionaldegree. 2 t2 ?/ i5 O$ H D8 {# B
% l) I4 @( h; l$ C$ X6 S1 @Lorn Pisal, an employee at Campura Systems Corporation, attended theprogram from 2005 to 2007. He said that before carrying the training onhis resume, it was exceedingly difficult to get a job. Sincegraduating, he is automatically shortlisted, he said. : P! @. F* Z: u7 I' T% w- H
$ X- i+ _( P6 k: V"The people who take this course are the first people to be selectedfor jobs," he said. "And the information and technology sector is themost promising in Cambodia for long-term careers." 1 E) g9 q$ d- Q: C/ p a; ?
2 A/ }8 p" O2 @5 @# `: B1 T' sCisco stipulates people must have at least two years of universityexperience to enroll. Fees are US$100 per course. In an effort topromote the employment of women in the information and technologysector, women are given a 60 percent discount on tuition fees, whilepublic servants receive a 50 percent discount. |
